Chenrezig - Black and White Thangka is handpainted in Nepal. Chenrezig can loosely be translated into “he who watches endlessly with eyes of compassion” and is considered to be the Buddha of Compassion.
The Dalai Lama is thought to be an incarnation of Chenrezig, a tradition that goes back to the late 14th century.
Chenrezig thangkas are rich in meaning; he is always painted in white to represent how he is free of all veils and therefore pure.
His four arms symbolize the 4 virtues; love, compassion, joy, and equanimity. While his two legs in lotus position represent the union of compassion and emptiness.
